Painting became a way of life for my Father. In an interview with the press in 1978 the reporter said, “Walking into the home of local marine painter Stan Hogg is very much like walking into a homely art gallery. His work covers every available inch of wall space of his bungalow and reveals his almost uncanny knack with colour. The cupboards in his studio are crammed with sketches and watercolours made over the last sixty years or so. “
Dad was born in Harwich Essex and for the rest of his life found he just had to paint. Over the years he captured the soft lighting of the Lake District, the dramatic mountain scenery in North Wales, coastal scenes from the Isle of Wight and harbour sketches in Cornwall. He wanted to help keep alive the memory of the fine old Thames Barges built locally and some of his paintings are shown on this page. It was the sea, which always fascinated him. "This is one of the most challenging things you can do," he used to explain. "Nothing stands still for you . ”
When only 17‑years old he compiled a portfolio of skyscapes ‑ a collection of pastel colour sketches capturing the effect of sunrise over the movement of the sea on our local beaches. Two examples of these are included on this web page and I have compiled a set of fine art prints for sale.
Stan was a quiet man and believed that painting was a way of life. "I feel that you have got to live the part," he used to say. He painted because he loved to and devoted all of his time to it when he could. Over the years he used several media for his work ‑ pastels, oils, watercolours and acrylic. His favourite expression was “Paint has to become more than just paint it has to become a reality. It is a case of expressing yourself to the utmost.”
I hope you find these examples of his work interesting.
