Keith
Whitehead
I began painting in the 1970’s and sold my first picture at that time as a self-taught artist. Circumstances forced a lengthy period of inactivity. When I recommenced I did so using oils, as previously, and recently had work exhibited at the Wakefield Art Gallery. I have a small studio in the garden, erected a few years ago and fully insulated so that I can work the year round, and virtually all my work is produced there. I work entirely in oils and prefer to offer original paintings for sale rather than prints. Virtually all these are framed and ready to hang.
Although I occasionally focus on other subject matter and the different challenges they present, my principle passions are for landscape, seascape and waterscape, and the interpretation of nature has always been a fundamental motivating factor for me. In relation to this kind of subject matter, there are two particular techniques available in oil painting which especially appeal to me: glazing and impasto and I like to make use of these wherever appropriate in enhancing the quality of a picture.
In selecting subject matter, I try to find something rather different in terms of view or perspective or elements in the content. These then add to the stimulation.
