ABOUT THE ART
I have a passion and a love for the open air and wide-open
spaces, and have always had a penchant for broad landscapes
and the beauty, peace, stillness and solitude to be
found there. Creating pieces of art is for me a meditative,
contemplative act and these are qualitites (for stilling
the mind, finding serenity, comfort, delight and blessing)
I hope to invoke in those viewing them.
We all benefit from aesthetic pleasure and the inspiriation
it provides – Plutarch suggests 'the mind is
not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be lighted',
the prophet Mohammad said 'If I had only two loaves
of bread I would barter one to nourish my soul' –
and it is well known that beauty and symmetry are
intrinsic to nature and natural selection and are
beneficial to our well-being on many levels.
I have an affinity with the medium of watercolour,
its qualities feel natural and suit my painting in
ways that other media do not. I paint scenes and objects
and atmospheres that make me happy, excite me, take
me to beautiful and significant times and places,
find and express part of who I am.
