After leaving Eastbourne Art School,
I spent seven years in Finland painting, and exhibiting,
both in Finland and Sweden. Exhibitors included, Pinella
Gallery Turku Finland, Itameri Gallery Helsinki Finland
and Halsvaha Gallery Stockholm Sweden.
I was based in the picturesque town of Turku Finland,
painting local scenes and people, and found they sold
well in Stockholm, Sweden being several hours away
by ferry. The Halsvaha Gallery was in the old part
of Stockholm, something like Brighton’s Lanes.
The Itameri in Helsinki was particularly interested
in my ‘Pre-Raphaelite’ style figure work,
something I am now doing again, also I exhibited here
with a more modern graphic style. Whilst in Finland
I had to obtain a work permit, which wasn't re-newed,
for reasons unknown to me, so I returned to England.
My agent in Finland continued to place work for me
at the Itameri, Pinella and Halsvaha, also several
smaller outlets, and some private commissions. At
this point I got several private clients some of whom
I still do work for. During the late eighties the
owners of Pinella sold the premises to a restaurant
chain, Itameri and Halsvaha have now both gone.
Two years ago I decided to move back to exhibiting;
recently I’ve shown work at Barons Gallery Brighton,
and Bangaroosh Gallery Brighton. And also Copenhagen’s
Respons Galleri. I have been published in England
and Sweden.
I paint using gouache on board, almost all my pictures
measure 28 x 20 inches, a variety of subjects Water
Nymphs, Mermaids Beach scenes, Swimming Pools, and
Winter Scenes. My painting of people around water
comes from a childhood spent on the beaches of my
home town Brighton in England.
