As a self-taught artist, I have painted since childhood
exploring drawing, watercolour and oil painting in
my formative years. Having obtained a Fine Art “A”
level back in 1970 I was encouraged by work colleagues
to persevere with my paintings and drawings, undertaking
a few commissions on the way. However, it was not
until 1996, that through an evening class things really
began for me when, by a stroke of luck, I discovered
pastel.
Pastels lit a fire in me I had never experienced.
There was a real urgency and vitality in my painting
and those pastels released an energy I did not know
I had. Since then, my early retirement and the building
of my studio in Hutton, Essex I am developing my art
career - without hindrance.
Landscapes and townscapes have since become my forte.
I have entered local and national competitions and
exhibitions with some success. My art materials travel
with me everywhere, Italy and the Caribbean firm favourites.
I enjoy capturing local scenes, and work “en
plein air” whenever I can. I am developing a
new style of pastel, some have called “fragmentation
art”. A recent demonstration of this technique
proved very popular with demands for a workshop to
enable others to explore this way in acrylics and
oils as well as pastels. I undertake commissions and
run workshops from my studio and workshops on a larger
scale for groups of up to 20 locally, give demonstrations
to and teach local Essex art groups.
